Where do you work?
Stereovision
What is your role?
I do print design, video editing and animation.
What do you love about being a designer?
The freedom! It's great to be working in a place that respects 'the process' and allows you to really flesh out ideas through all the creative exercises. It's also cool when you do a club-poster and you see it up everywhere. Great feeling of accomplishment.
When did you graduate from Shillington?
I did the May 2010 full-time course.
What area were you working in before the course?
I was working in digital media, producing video and animation for digital signage and web.
Did you have any design experience before the course?
Only stuff that I'd taught myself through animation, and some limited attempts at brochures.
Why did you decide to study at Shillington?
I wanted to know the reasons why my designs either looked good...or rubbish. The basic principles behind design, networking and being in a creative environment for 3 months! I was working in a sales environment and really wanted to be surrounded by like-minded people.
What was the most valuable thing you took away from the course?
The fundamental rules of design, different design styles for future inspiration, and a network of kick-ass designers (my classmates).
How did you find the environment, facilities and teaching?
The college was set up and run in a very professional manner, that I think did well to set the students up for what they can expect in future design roles. The pace was sometimes tough, but pretty on par with what the industry demands. The library was fantastic.
How confident did you feel about entering the design industry after you graduated?
Very confident. I was actually showing some people my completed projects halfway through the course, when I was offered a job at the studio I am at now!
How long did it take you to secure a job?
Immediately.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Designing the poster for the club night 'Clash of the Titans' at Eurotrash Bar. It was a style that I'd wanted to attempt for a really long time, and it was great to see it printed up.
Where do you see yourself 12 months from now?
Either working freelance or working in a marketing division somewhere.
Any advice for aspiring designers out there?
Look for the design in everything. Keep adding to your visual diary. Learn the shortcuts!
