Where do you work?
I'm working in two small design companies, Semi Strange iPhone Applications and my own business, Rici Design.
Describe your typical day as a designer.
My typical day involves directly collaborating with clients and brainstorming ways to achieve effective design solutions to suit their needs. Ranging from print media to web the days are never the same and I love the fact all our clients are very different. This means I am always challenged.
What do you love about being a designer?
I love being almost like a 'medium' so to speak; listening to a clients needs and understanding their vision. Combined with my new-found knowledge, I combine these factors to (hopefully) achieve a wow factor that inspires the client and that I’m proud of. The biggest kick of all is a customer's gratitude.
When did you graduate from Shillington?
August 2010.
Why did you decide to do the course?
I decided to go back to school after 7 years in order to refresh my skills. I think it's important to do this every now and then as the industry is changing all the time. There are always new programs and features and I wanted to make sure I was on the same page as the industry. It was great to get inspired again and gain the confidence to get out there again.
What was the most valuable thing you took away from Shillington?
There were several things:
In-depth 'how-to' lessons in all the programs and design fundamentals.
Inspirational research in our 'I love these guys' sessions which opened my eyes to a whole new world of ideas.
Lastly, there was an amazing attitude that radiated through all the members of the class. I had not really experienced this kind of positivity, passion and appreciation for design before. It was a great environment to be in and I continue to use that same passion with my colleagues today.
How did you find the college environment, facilities and teaching?
Brilliant! I really enjoyed the way the content was presented and I had great respect for my highly knowledgeable teachers. The facilities are top notch and it felt like an awesome place to attend everyday. My classmates were also treasures; it was lovely to share ideas, support and critique each other’s work in a respectful and helpful manner. I really enjoyed listening to their point of views and learnt so much from them all.
How confident did you feel about entering the design industry after you graduated?
I was very confident to take on new challenges. It was awesome to know that your work was technically on the money.
Any advice for someone pondering whether to take the leap into graphic design and sign up for the course?
Graphic design is an amazing career choice. It's hard work but the pay-off is incredible. If someone is considering a career in graphic design, this course would be the way to start. The structure and the layout of the course is really well thought out. I believe it covers a very high level of design standards in a practical way where you learn hands-on. This course makes you job-ready. The teachers have had REAL experience and are extremely informed and happy to share their stories.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Recently I was lucky enough to be invited to go work in Mykonos, Greece — all expenses paid. Working with multi-national colleagues and dealing with agents from around the world, this was probably the most intense working hours I have had to deal with. It was also the most rewarding and the client was very appreciative.
This year I also teed up with a record company and have had the opportunity to work on some pretty amazing projects. Recently we have been working closely with IGA Supermarkets and have just commenced working on the biggest job I have been involved in so far… and of course the Shillington iPhone App!
Where do you see yourself 12 months from now?
I would love to have a few more team members in a great studio, somewhere stylish. We'll see how we go… it doesn’t hurt to dream x
