Where do you Work?
I have recently started up my own design company, Tushae Design.
What do you love about being a designer?
Feeling inspired everyday and creating beautiful things for people.
When did you graduate from Shillington?
November 2009.
What area were you working in before the course?
I was working in the fashion industry.
Did you have any design experience before the course?
None at all.
Why did you decide to do the course?
I was always interested in art and design and Shillington was recommended to me by a past student. I liked the idea you could study design and graduate with the skills and a qualification after such a short period of time. The college hours (8 to 5) and the fast pace also reflected the life in a studio.
What was the most valuable thing you took away from Shillington?
As I mentioned in the previous question, the short deadlines we were given to complete briefs were so valuable to prepare you for the industry.
How did you find the college environment, facilities and teaching?
I liked the fact that the college reflected a studio environment. It was friendly and welcoming!
How confident did you feel about entering the design industry after you graduated?
The lecturers at Shillington made sure my portfolio was the best it could be. That made me very confident.
What was the response like to your portfolios during interviews?
Great! Studios were surprised by the high level of work and attention to detail which was achieved in such a short course. They also mentioned that there were a great variety of briefs over a range of areas (i.e. branding to publishing to packaging).
How long did it take you to secure a job?
Not long at all. I initially did an internship with Oyster Magazine which then led to me designing their next issue. After that I secured a full-time position at a design studio.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
My first piece of published work, Oyster Magazine #87.
Where do you see yourself 12 months from now?
Hopefully running a successful business and perhaps working overseas.
Any advice for someone pondering whether to take the leap into graphic design and sign up for the course?
Its such a great career! There was never a boring day at the college. The teachers are very thorough, friendly and helpful and I've made some great friends there. I'm so glad I studied at Shillington!
