What is your role?
I am freelancing via a company I have established called Running Man Graphic Design and I am also currently completing an internship at Dow Design.
What sort of work are you doing?
I am involved mainly in packaging design and corporate branding through both Dow and Running Man. I am finding it challenging and enjoyable.
What sort of deadlines do you work to?
I am doing my internship at Dow Design and they are very much against the churn and burn style of graphic design. Design is done in consultation with the team and focuses on quality design as opposed to quantity. Much time is taken looking at every tiny detail of each piece of work. The clients they deal with are very large and they expect high quality design and as such, time frames are quite reasonable.
What do you love about Graphic Design?
I love graphic design because it allows me to be challenged every moment of every day. No day is the same as a different set of challenges present themselves with each new brief. There is no such thing as a boring day in this industry! I also love the fact that the only limitations you face are those of your own imagination. If you have the will to push yourself and your design to the limit and beyond, you will be amazed at what you can achieve.
What do you find inspiring?
There is nothing more inspiring than great design. My advice to future Shillington students is to hit the streets and start looking around... the good, the bad and the ugly of design is everywhere and it's all useful in inspiring your own work. Also, READ EVERYTHING! Reading magazines, design annuals and books containing award winning designs is a great way to set goals as to what you would like to achieve. Now that I am out there doing it, I also have the luxury of looking at what my colleagues are doing and I am inspired to be as good as them.
How has Shillington helped you gain employment?
The course equipped me not only with the technical skills required to do the work, but it also gave me confidence in those skills. Rather than being nervous about seeking out employment, I now feel that I can confidently stride into any agency and know that I have knowledge, skills and portfolio to back me up. I nailed my internship before I even finished the course and I was out of school just one week before I landed my first freelance client and I am steadily growing my client base. Thanks Shillington!
