What is your current job?
I started my own business and basically work from home apart from going out to meet with clients and attending networking events. I offer predominantly print based design but also offer simple web design (brochure sites).
What sort of work are you doing?
My target market is small business in the local area so the work is varied. The work has included logos, business cards, stationery, brochures, newsletters, press ads, websites and digital catalogues. I can't believe the amount of businesses who have no idea where their logo is and therefore have to pay to have it recreated again. Thank goodness for the Pen Tool!
What sort of deadlines do you work to?
The deadlines I work with are pretty tight. Clients tend to want everything done yesterday & they find it hard to understand that even after the design process is complete, the printing process can take anything up to two weeks. It can sometimes be a real juggling act when there are a few jobs on the go.
What do you love about Graphic Design?
I love the creativity and the generation of ideas in Graphic Design - the challenge of trying to produce something original. Also, since I have a marketing and management background I enjoy being able to use graphic design effectively in terms of producing something that is tune with the clients business image, target market, industry and something to help them stand out from their competitors.
What do you find inspiring?
I find any good design inspiring. New, unique, clever and fresh design. If I ever have a car accident, it will be because I'm too busy looking at logos on shop fronts!
How has Shillington helped you gain employment?
I had no previous design education before attending Shillington, apart from dabbling in a little bit of web design. Shillington taught me not only the basics of design and the principles, and how to use the software, but more importantly, gave me the practical skills to feel confident enough to deal with printers and clients.
