What is your role?
Graphic Designer.
What sort of work are you doing?
Working for a small studio means I get to work on all sorts of things. In the first 2 months of my job I've worked logos, brochures, promotional advertising, websites, web advertisments, stationery, packaging, press ads, magazine layout, flash animation artwork, signage, photo retouching and pitching presentations!
What sort of deadlines do you work to?
Most of our deadlines are short - a day or so. Occasionally we get to work on things that we can spend a week or two on, which is nice.
What do you love about Graphic Design?
I love the challenge of making something that both I and the client will be happy with. It has to look good to me, but it also has to meet the brief, so there's a great meeting of two worlds - my internal ideas and inspirations and the real business world out there.
What do you find inspiring?
Anything with an illustrative element. I love expressive, quirky illustration that makes you smile. I'm obsessed with eboy at the moment.
How has Shillington helped you gain employment?
After just a week at my job I realised that the teachers at the college knew exactly what was required out there in the industry. The course was right on the money in terms of relevant skills. Because we all got such great portfolios by the end of the course, it also gave me a lot of confidence to go out there and start showing people what I could do. I knew for sure I was going to be able to go to that interview and tell them I had the skills, and prove it with my work.
